Fees can change how much money you receive and how much a personal loan ultimately costs. Always review the lender’s disclosures instead of relying only on an advertised rate or payment.
Origination fees
An origination fee may be deducted from the loan proceeds or added to the balance. If a fee is deducted, the amount deposited into your account will be less than the stated loan amount.
Payment-related fees
Late fees and returned-payment fees may apply when a payment is missed or rejected. Confirm due dates, grace periods, and automatic-payment requirements before accepting an offer.
Optional and less common charges
Some offers include optional protection products or other services. Prepayment penalties are less common on personal loans, but you should still confirm whether paying early is allowed without an extra charge.
- Read the fee schedule.
- Compare APR and net loan proceeds.
- Ask which services are optional.
- Keep payment reminders to avoid preventable fees.
